Colic
is one of the most dreaded words that parents fear. Colic is when
a baby cries uncontrollably for hours on end without any noticeable
cause and no possible cure. It often begins anywhere from a few
weeks to a few months old, and can last for months. Most often,
the crying begins in the evening hours and continues for very long
periods of time. Many times, the only way a baby stops crying is
they simply cry themselves to sleep. Some say that colic is caused
by trapped gas, while many pediatricians say there is no known cause
for colic. All say, however, that a colicky baby is definitely in
pain.
Parents must often get creative when trying to
stop a colicky baby from crying, and it is also important that there
be opportunities for the parents to step away from the crying baby.
Lengthy crying can cause stress and frustration, so if you have
a baby with colic, it is important to enlist as much help as possible
to give you temporary breaks from the crying. Since there is no
known cure for colic, it is something that parents have to simply
have to wait out. Given time, all colicky babies will eventually
stop the crying.
