Eating Deli Meats

Eating Deli Meats While Pregnant
Just
when your cravings are setting in, you find out that you have to
be cautious about what you eat. If you’ve heard that you can’t
eat deli meats when you are pregnant, then you haven’t heard
the whole truth. Deli meats or processed meats along with unpasteurized
milk and milk products contain bacteria that are known to cause
an infection called listeriosis. Pregnant women, along with their
unborn children, are more susceptible to this infection.
This does not mean that you have to skip out on
your favorite sandwich shop. There are some precautions that you
can take. When ordering out, opt for the hot sandwiches. You can
eat these meats at home as well. Just remember that all deli meat,
luncheon meat and hot dogs should be reheated until they are steaming.
This will kill any bacteria that are present.
Deli meats are not the only food responsible for
listeriosis. During pregnancy, you should avoid unpasteurized milk
and unpasteurized soft cheeses including feta and brie. Vegetables
can also carry the bacteria and should be thoroughly washed before
eating.
You don’t have to give up all of your favorite
foods, but taking a few precautionary steps can protect your baby
and keep you feeling your best!
