Baby Doctor Visits
When
you have to take your baby or toddler to the doctor, it can be an
irritating experience. Even when your baby isn’t sick, and
doesn’t have to receive shots, you will often have to wait
for a long period in the waiting room which can lead to a very antsy
baby or toddler. Then, the nurse will often call you back to the
room where you will wait for another long period and your baby or
toddler will become even more impatient. This is an even worse experience
if your baby or toddler is sick. There are a few ways you can make
the best of the doctor’s visit, though. While it will likely
still not be enjoyable, you can try to keep your baby a little less
fussy and a little more occupied.
One way to ensure that your baby or toddler is not as fussy is to
be sure that he is not hungry. You should feed him before you leave
the house, and bring a drink with you, and a bottle if necessary.
You should always try to plan ahead for this type of situation by
scheduling all doctors’ visits at a time when your baby shouldn’t
be hungry.
Another thing to plan for is sleepiness. The best way to avoid your
baby becoming sleepy while you wait for the doctor is to plan the
visit nowhere near nap time. If they schedule you for around this
time, you can simply adjust your baby’s schedule that day
for around the trip. Have your baby take an earlier nap (later is
not usually better, because this may mean that your baby won’t
take a nap until after the visit, which means a cranky baby in the
meantime).
You can help your baby stay occupied by taking a couple of small
books and toys along with you for the visit. Even if your doctor’s
office has toys and books, there may be other babies there playing
with those things, and you may need to rely on what you brought.
Instead of just handing your baby or toddler a book or toy, you
can use the time to play with him. Read him the book and have him
point out certain items, or play with the toys with him. If he gets
wrapped up in playing, it can help the time seem to move a little
more quickly, which can prevent him from getting as antsy and cranky.
